America the Beautiful | Super Bowl 2023

  Colin Denny, a research assistant in the College of Education, will be performing a sign language interpretation of the song "America the Beautiful" during the pregame show at the 2023 Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. He will be one of three sign language performers, and will be using a mix of American Sign Language and North American Indian Sign Language, alongside the singer Babyface. Denny is a Native American who grew up on the Navajo Nation, and he often felt isolated as a deaf person. He hopes that his performance will inspire other Native American deaf people across the country to know that they're not alone and to raise awareness of North American Indian Sign Language, which he is working to help preserve and teach through his work in the College of Education. He is pursuing his master's degree in sign language education and works as an ASL mentor.

Earthquake in Turkey | Latest Update

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit central Turkey and northwest Syria before sunrise on February 6, 2023. The earthquake caused destruction to cities already affected by civil war, resulting in over 1700 deaths and thousands of injuries. The death toll in Turkey stood at 1,014 people, while in Syria, the health ministry reported 430 deaths and over 1000 injuries. The second quake of magnitude 7.7, which hit the region in the early afternoon, added to the difficulties of rescue workers struggling to save lives. The earthquake was felt across the region, including Cyprus and Lebanon, and resulted in widespread destruction, causing buildings to collapse and endangering rescuers. 45 countries have offered to help the search and rescue efforts, with the US standing ready to provide assistance. The earthquake was the worst to hit Turkey this century and was described as "like the apocalypse".
