The New York City Marathon | World Largest Marathon has been Cancelled
The New York City Marathon, the work largest Marathon has been cancelled due to current COVID-19 pandemic issue, the highlight of the launch calendar, should have been even more special this year.
But like many aspects of ordinary life, the world's largest competition has been plagued by this pandemic.
The race, which will take effect in Nov, was canceled due to health and safety issues, sports organizers said on Wed.
"This year's cancellation of the TCS New York City Marathon is very disappointing for everyone involved, but it was obviously a course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective," said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of New York Road Runners, event organizers.
The organization said it would send more information directly to registered invigilators. They will have the option of claiming a refund or lowering their entry in a different year.
The competition tournament will now take place on Nov 7, 2021.
"Although the march is a spectacular and beloved event in our city, I congratulate the New York Road runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
The race started in 1970 and has grown into the world's largest race. Last year, more than 53,000 athletes crossed the finish line.
Outside of the competition, promoters were also forced to cancel the 2020 Abbott Dash at the Finish Line 5K on Oct 31.
The only temporary competition for major ticketing events has been held this year.
The 2020 Boston Marathon race is canceled, and will be the first race in the history of the event. The event was postponed from Apr 20 to Sep 14.
